young girl (a story haiku)

inevitably
nervous, he stumbled, quickened
my hesitant smile

his literal in-
stability, a magnet
to my naive heart

oh yes, I will change
that one, watch him grow, flower
like my chia pet

realization, he's
not a common houseplant
waiting for water

his roots formed long ago
by his blood, his desires
realization, he

will not change for me
suddenly morph into a
knowing gentleman

all he knows is that
i will bend for him, create
reasons he is fine

so now i'm cement
fixed in place to remember
big girls don't crumble

they build their own castles
while their princes chase frogs
they become ruler

stand

stand
for each other
for peace
for love

stand up
for each other

let's let the bias
end

let's hold hands,
pray for ourselves
for each other

pray
for a world
where education rules
and our brilliant minds
need not to fight
because we have love
because we are bright

stand up
for what you believe
judge things
based on what your two
eyes have seen
have researched
have evidence for

pray
stand up
take each others' sides
take each other
by the hand
stand up
for each other

there's nothing on tv

this life
of glamour
reality tv
hairstyles and fashions

some are living on hope
and rations

women sold
for milk, exchanged so
a family can have a cow

so what to do
what to do now,

get angry
send money
say something

there's nothing on TV
we're out of chips

ten people share a room
give manicures to ladies
in the city

ladies like me

there's nothing on tv

tell my why

tell me why peace is
not possible in this war
torn power struggle
of a beautiful, plush world
hungry for love, hands to hold

tell me why we care
more about Kardashians
then the suffering
of inner city children
scraping their pantries for hope

tell me why you can't
make a difference, just one
person in this world
why your one smile, your one
dollar won't change anything

this life

when the night
becomes the day again,
the days blur

the routine drains
the routine is peace

break the routine
into pieces

build a rainbow
that reaches a star

name that star
at midnight exactly

at 6 am exactly
night will become day again

i will have forgotten
to try something new
or perhaps I won't have
been brave enough

i haven't spoken
in a while
not really

at 6 am tomorrow,
a new day will begin.
this time,
i will relish its moments
instead of counting the minutes.

smile at a neighbor
rather than rush inside
to get chores
done

laugh at the baby
instead of chasing after
his crumbs with a broom

one day the day
will become night again
forever

easier that way

face down
i can't see
look to my hands
the disaster before me

tattered pants
the man with a can
his sign says
he was a vet

my face is down
i can't see

i walk into things
it is easier that way

blinded by my fear of the truth
i am amused by kitten videos
and snapchat bear faces
distracted and angry
about the presidential races

my head is down
staring at my phone
i'd rather not see
to tell the truth

it hurts to much
so I look at my screen

i miss the sound
of your voice

how it feels to
sit next to someone
and have a
conversation

but that can be hard,
you see
being real and all

so I look down
it is easier that way
