the blissfully blind

the sun rises
and sets
it hasn't
reached us yet

the sun rises
and sets
as people
take bets

as children
go home
with keys
'round their necks

to dingy
apartments
where they
can't afford
rent

as some
drink champagne
and whine
about clothes

others gossip
and giggle
then paint
their toes

the sun rises
and sets
but if
it should fall
it'd burn
us all
and we'd
regret

the horrors
we left
unmentioned
we saw
but ignored
the mutations
we pretended
not to abhor

the sun
rises
and sets
it hasn't
reached us
yet
